ARUSHA TOWN
Fast becoming a large city, Arusha is nestled in the towering shadow of Mt. Meru, a 4,700m high extinct volcano, Arusha is the hub of the safari industry in Tanzania and East Africa. It’s also the home of the East African Community consisting of Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. The United Nations Criminal Tribunal on Rwanda is also located here in the International Conference Center (AICC) and its proceedings are open to the general public.
Arusha offers visitors a wide variety of wildlife safaris, mountain treks, and coastal getaways that include low-budget camping and accommodations as well as 5-star hotels and lodges. There are countless restaurants serving delicious local dishes and international cuisines, internet cafes, coffee houses, bars, clothing and curio shops, ATM and Western Union services, Federal Express, safari operators, and transport providers. You can walk easily and safely from our location to the colorful Maasai Market where you can purchase native crafts of every type as well as traditional herbs. There are also delightful guided tours of the town both day and night.
Arusha has an active weekly music and club scene where you can meet local people, ex-pats, and others like yourself. It is truly a cultural melting pot for night owls. For example, Wednesday nights downtown really get jumpin’ at Mawingu (Kiswahili for “clouds”) where you relax and take in the scene or dance the night away to live African music. Thursday nights boom at Via Via (near the AICC), a popular meeting place, bar, and restaurant that features live bands ranging from African, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Blues, and Jazz. There’s a large rainbow crowd of friendly regulars and U.N. staffers. Friday and Saturday nights find the crowds packing Masai Camp. Located just 2km from the heart of town, you can boogie, drink, chat, shoot pool, and party to the DJ’s music till the wee hours. Weekends also sizzle at the famous Colobus Club, down the road from Masai, were you have your choice of two dance floors and great disco music. Also check out their exciting weeknight activities. For more info on other hotspots, stop in at the Tanzanian Tourist Board, near the Clock Tower.
